The 1973 Indianapolis race was one of the worst years in the history of this gigantic event. The actual race was postponed twice during the race due to rain and actually ended on Wednesday(!) instead of the normal starting and ending on Saturday.

1973 Accident This years race was also plagued by accident, driver Art Pollard was killed on the qualifying day and during Saturday there was an large accident where Salt Walther and more than 10 spectators were injured. And driver Swede Savage was seriously injured during the race on Monday and died one month later. Also a crewman was killed during the end of the race on Monday.

The race was ended after only 133 laps of the planned 200 due to more rain and Gordon Johncock was declared the winner in his red number 20 Eagle - Offenhauser race car.
